During library lesson with my Year 1 this week, we read a Non Fiction book "How to help the earth" - by the Lorax in connection to their classroom unit of inquiry "How we share the planet" focusing on the line of inquiry "personal choices that help to sustain the environment." For our activity, students enjoyed writing and drawing how they can help the earth on the truffula leaves.
The library has simply been buzzing and full of creative kids ever since we introduced our new maker space area...
"Eating the alphabet" by Lois Ehlert is such an awesome book, read to my little ECH 2 bookworms by our principal. The book has beautiful illustrations of favorite fruits and vegetables and some that we are not so familiar with. This lesson also reinforces their classroom Unit of Inquiry "Living things" focusing on plants. The students had fun showing off their recognition of the first letters of the fruits by sounding it out and singing their alphabet song at the end of the lesson. We also learned the Chinese name for watermelon is XIGUA and the students enjoyed making their watermelon craft which made for a great display in the library. The book is quite lengthy though so we had this lesson over a 2 weeks period.
